The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the shift toward hybrid working. According to the most recent Gallup data, more than half of employees in ‘remote capable’ roles expect a hybrid arrangement in 2022 and beyond.
As a result, organizations under increasing pressure to rethink their approach to real estate. For many, this means right-sizing their property portfolio to maximize the use of space. For many more, it means redesigning the workplace experience to meet occupiers’ changing needs and expectations.
Technology and, more specifically, data will play a fundamental role in this new hybrid age. In the immediate term, workplace technology can help real estate leaders design and manage space in a way that allows hybrid or mobile employees to have the most frictionless experience possible, including:

  • Occupancy measuring and monitoring

  • Wayfinding and navigation

  • Move management

  • Space management ensuring occupiers always have the space they need to execute tasks

  • Over the long-term, however, organizations can use the data from workplace technology platforms to identify trends fortheir strategic strategic real estate planning. By harnessing the smart capability of these technology platforms, including IoT sensors and analytics, real estate leaders can constantly tweak and improve the occupier experience, even as it changes, and make evidence-based decisions regarding their future real estate, whether that’s investing or divesting in space, leasing it, or repurposing it as the organization evolves.
