The adage goes, "Build a better mousetrap, and the world will beat a path to your door." Biometric data is the new mousetrap, with many uses to improve employee time and attendance tracking; provide more secure access to businesses, buildings, services and equipment; better secure access to computers and mobile devices; better qualify access to health and wellness programs; and enhance the safety of financial transactions. And while the promise of biometric data – to provide enhanced security, prevent fraud, and limit access to those with authorization – is high, there are serious concerns and legal issues that must be understood to properly mitigate liability for employers.
