China: Challenges and Opportunities Ahead

China: Challenges and Opportunities Ahead

April 2014

China has emerged as an economic powerhouse. GDP growth that has averaged 8 percent to 10 percent per year has helped propel the country to its current position as the second largest economy in the world behind that of the United States. Even the "slower" growth projections ahead for 2014 and 2015 at 7.5 percent and 7.3 percent respectively represent a formidable pace compared to more developed nations. Clearly, the Chinese government has ambitious plans to keep pushing its economy forward while striving to achieve its greater vision of developing a ?modern, harmonious, and creative high-income society? by 2030.
