November 29, 2005—WHY MASSACHUSETTS: The Executive Decision
Approximately 100 people toured the new North American headquarters for Straumann, a worldwide leader in implant dentistry and tissue regeneration products. Straumann, headquarted in Basel, Switzerland, was seeking to expand its presence in the United States, while further globalizing its production and distribution platform to accomodate current and future growth. After an exhaustive search across the nation, the firm sited its 200,000 sf office, training, and manufacturing facility in Massachusetts for a variety of factors, including: a highly skilled labor pool; partnering opportunities with nearby higher education and high tech training institutions; potential synergies with area biotech research and medical device organizations; and the proximity to Switzerland. This new facility in Andover creates a benchmark for the industry, and illustrates Massachusetts' many positive attributes for attracting world class organizations.

November 16, 2005—BEHIND CLOSED DOORS: What sets winning presentations apart?
More than 200 people attended this CoreNet/BuildBoston workshop to learn what works and what doesn't in the all important selection interview. A distinquised panel of CRE executives and service providers representated a broad range of industries and organizational cultures. The panel expressed that "one size does not fit all," and that it is incumbent on potential vendors to investigage the differences between client companies and the uniqueness of their requirements. Often overlooked is expressing to the client how their project will be handled from conceptualization through accounting and budgeting; how complex aspects of the assignment(s) and unforeseen challenges will addressed; and what tools will be brought to bear. Finally, it was communicated that the team delivering services should attend the presentation, not the president/CEO or other sales and marketing professionals.

September 20, 2005—SAVING FENWAY: Planning for the future while preserving the past
More than 100 CoreNet members and guests flocked to Fenway Park to learn about expansion plans for the venerable old ballpark. The gathering, one of the last at the famed .406 Club, was hosted by Red Sox Vice President of Planning & Development, Janet Marie Smith. Ms. Smith shared the Red Sox' vision for the 94-year-old facility, which focuses on the organization's continuing commitment to enhancing the fan experience. Particular challenges include the shortened construction season (baseball's offseason), and the stewardship of an asset so cherished by the community. The Red Sox design team focused on seamless design that did not obscure the quirks of Fenway, but delivered the amenities demanded by a 21st century fan base. Some of the new improvements include:
- A newly redesigned .406 Club to include restaurant-style seating and removal of the much-maligned glass enclosure. The new club will be dubbed the EMC Club.
- "Pavilion level" seating to replace roof box seats. Several rows of seating will be added.
- 1,100 seats to be added throughout the park, bringing the 2006 Opening Day total to 38,800.
