Panel outlines processes toward
building strategic alliance partnerships

A panel of seasoned real estate veterans discussed the evolution of strategic
alliance partnerships and the cultural and performance issues that surface along

'Green Buildings II' event features
a case study with a unique twist

The chapter held its second Green Buildings event of 2008 on Dec. 3 at the Yale School of
Architecture in New Haven. Jim Baker, director, facilities management at Lancaster,
Pa.-based Armstrong World Industries, center, and Jeff Barber, managing director and
leader, Global Sustainable Design Task Force, at Gensler, right, presented the
background on Armstrong's Platinum LEED-certified corporate headquarters. The
company completed the building while the LEED point system was still in development.
It then received LEED certification as an existing building. Dave Hawkins, left, of
CLW Real Estate Group, played a lead role in organizing the event.

Real Advantage Workshop Provides Insights
Into Myers-Briggs Personality Types

Olivia Kriebl, Executive Development Consultant for Aetna, right photo, conducted a Real Advantage workshop on "Using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator." Attendees gained insights into the Myers-Briggs framework and into working more effectively with various types. Marriage of Branding and Real Estate

Real Advantage workshop panelists discussed the role real estate strategy can
play in helping to create and reinforce a company's brand identity. Left to right,

MetroHartford Alliance Hosts
2nd Annual Travelers Championship Breakfast

Chapter members gathered at the chapter's second annual Travelers Championship breakfast at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Conn. Sandra Johnson, fifth from left, and her MetroHartford Alliance colleagues hosted the June 20 event at the Alliance's chalet along Corporate Row. The group had a perfect view of the 18th green and the golfers' approach shots.

Real Advantage Workshop:
Aligning CRE's "bid" with the corporate "ask"

Ed Noha discussed ways to close the gap between senior management's
"ask" and Corporate Real Estate's (CRE) "bid" -- in other words, how to
align CRE strategy and services with senior management's corporate
strategy and objectives. Noha, Managing Director, Strategic Consulting
at Jones Lang LaSalle, spoke at a June 24 Real Advantage workshop,
hosted by Phoenix in Hartford.

Real Advantage Panel Discusses
Real Estate's Impact on Productivity
A blue-chip panel discussed the positive impact real estate strategies and
innovative workplace design can have on employees' productivity. Panelists
called on their experience at companies such as Capital One, Cisco and
Nokia to demonstrate how progressive approaches to real estate can promote
collaboration while reducing occupancy costs. Clockwise from top left,

LEED Certification Demystified

Paul Lalli, senior associate at Gensler and a leader of the firm's sustainable consulting group, gave a talk on green buildings and the LEED certification point system. The March 18 chapter event, held at the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, was one of the best-attended chapter events in recent memory. Those in attendance gave the event an average score of 6.2 out of 7.

Chapter Donates $1,000
to The Shelter for Women

The Connecticut/Westchester chapter donated $1,000 to The Shelter for Women. The
119-year-old Hartford-based organization operates Gray Lodge in Hartford and Alison Gill
Lodge in Manchester, Conn. Gray Lodge is a residential treatment program for girls and
their families. Alison Gill Lodge is a group home for young women ages 14-21. Chapter
Executive Director Dan Elman, second from right, Chapter Co-Chair Karen Odlum of Aetna,
far right, and Dave Hawkins of CLW Real Estate Services Group presented the check to
Pat Buxton, Director of Education at the Gray Lodge School. Hawkins is a member of

in The Leader Magazine
Pitney Bowes' Stamford, Conn., headquarters renovation received a five-page spread in CoreNet Global's March/April 2008 The Leader magazine. The piece, co-authored by Chapter Co-Chair Maureen Fahy, Pitney Bowes' Vice President, Global Real Estate, and Jim Ryan, Pitney Bowes' Manager, Special Projects, highlights the project's environmental and technological innovations. The renovation was the subject of a chapter Real Advantage workshop last September (scroll down for details).

Ins and Outs of Tax Incenti ves

Ken Hunter of PricewaterhouseCoopers led a Feb. 26 Real Advantage workshop on economic incentives for site selection. Hunter, PWC's National Practice Leader for Site Selection, Credits and Incentives Solutions, outlined the types of incentives generally available. He offered recommendations on how to align real estate with other corporate stakeholders to best take advantage of those incentives. Pitney Bowes hosted the standing-room-only event at its Shelton, Conn., facility.

The Hartford Hosts Real Advantage
Webcast on Site Selection
The Connecticut/Westchester chapter's final Real Advantage workshop of 2007 took the form of a
Webcast, which The Hartford hosted on Dec. 13. Although a winter storm limited the turnout at The Hartford, attendees were able to participate over the Web (and a conference call) from their own computers. CB Richard Ellis' Phoenix-based Labor Analytics Group presented its "Workforce Longevity Analysis." The analytical tool is designed to help end users identify the best local markets for operations such as call centers, back-office functions and manufacturing, based on demographic factors, wage rates and the competitive environment in those markets.
