A Challenge from the Mayor of London: Reduce Energy and Carbon Emissions Citywide

September 2015

The Mayor’s Business Energy Challenge was launched in 2014. It is a call to action to London businesses to become more energy efficient and reduce their carbon emissions, so becoming active contributors to meeting London’s ambitious carbon reduction goals. The Mayor has set a target to reduce London’s carbon dioxide emissions by 60% of their 1990 level by 2025. Most of these emissions come from burning fossil fuels to power and heat buildings so London companies have an important role to play. The BEC will recognise those companies that are already leaders in reducing energy from their building stock, and motivate many more to join in and drive efficiencies in their businesses. The session will provide an overview of the BEC and the awards scheme used to recognise its participants, and summarise how the programme is aligned with other city-led programmes globally that are leading to improved building performance and tangible costs savings for owners and occupiers.
